Why My Background in Disability Support Shapes the Way We Care for NDIS Participants

When I started Happy Cleaning Co, I knew I wanted to create a cleaning business that was about more than simply making a house look clean.
My previous experience as a psychosocial, intellectual and physical disability support worker has shaped the way I approach our NDIS clients and their families every single day.
It taught me something that I believe is incredibly important when working inside someone's home: every person, every family and every situation is different.
And sometimes, cleaning is about much more than cleaning.
Understanding that every NDIS participant is different
Before starting Happy Cleaning Co, I worked alongside people living with a range of disabilities and support needs. That experience gave me a much deeper understanding of the importance of patience, empathy, communication and flexibility. For some NDIS participants, having someone new enter their home can feel overwhelming. For others, changes to routine can be difficult. Some people may have sensory sensitivities, communication differences, mobility limitations, anxiety or difficulty explaining exactly what they need.
My background in disability support means I don't expect everyone to respond to our services in the same way.
Instead, we take the time to understand the person in front of us.
We ask questions. We listen. We adapt.
NDIS cleaning is about the person, not just the house
When you provide cleaning services to an NDIS participant, you're entering someone's personal space. Their home is their safe space, and we believe that deserves to be treated with respect. Our role isn't to judge the condition of someone's home or make assumptions about why things are the way they are.
Life happens. Disability, illness, changing circumstances, fatigue, caring responsibilities and everyday life can all affect a person's ability to keep on top of their home.
There is no judgement here.
Our job is to help make things feel a little more manageable.
A flexible approach to NDIS cleaning
My previous support work experience taught me that flexibility isn't just a nice quality to have. Sometimes, it's essential.
That might mean:
Taking a little more time to build trust with a new participant
Working around a participant's routines
Being mindful of sensory sensitivities
Communicating in a way that works for the individual
Understanding that some days may be harder than others
Adjusting our approach when someone's circumstances change
Working alongside family members, carers or support coordinators when appropriate
Breaking a larger cleaning or decluttering task into manageable steps
Respecting personal boundaries and the participant's home environment
We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
Supporting NDIS participants and their families
I also understand that NDIS support doesn't only affect the participant.
Families and carers can carry an enormous amount of responsibility, and sometimes having reliable cleaning support can provide much-needed breathing room.
For some families, we're simply there to take cleaning off their plate.
For others, our support can help create a safer, more functional and more comfortable home environment.Sometimes, what a family needs most is someone who understands that things aren't always straightforward.
That's where my previous experience really matters.
I know that support isn't always linear.
I know that communication can look different from person to person.
And I know that sometimes you need to slow down, change the plan and meet someone where they are.
